Brooklyn Roundhouse

The above is the Brooklyn Roundhouse, our current home, which resides near the intersections of SE 17th Avenue and SE Holgate Blvd, Portland, Oregon. The Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads have graciously permitted us to work on and maintain the steam locomotives using this facility at free-of-charge. Times change, increasing railroad business means the Brooklyn Yard will soon get overhauled, which includes the removal of the Brooklyn Roundhouse and turntable.

Future ORHF Property

The highlighted portion of this aerial photograph shows the approximate area we're seeking to purchase. Yes, it looks small and oddly-shaped, but it's actually over six times larger than what we currently have now. It is right across the street from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), as well as connected to two railroads, the Union Pacific, and Oregon Pacific Railroad. Freight and Amtrak trains run on the mainline alongside the northeast side of the property, and soon MAX light rail and Portland Streetcar will also run along the south side of the property.

Since negotiations on property purchase is underway, changes may be made to the final property layout, pending easements or adjustments. Of dozens of places explored, this property's been determined by the ORHF as the best site for the permanent home to be built for Portland's three steam locomotives.

  • Direct connection with Union Pacific and Oregon Pacific Railroad
  • Within city limits of Portland
  • Easy freeway access
  • Next to soon-to-be-built light rail and streetcar routes
  • No longer under a 30-day eviction notice
  • No more leaky roofs, inoperable doors, broken windows
  • New facility equipment for heavy maintenance

Your support is needed more than ever to build a permanent home for the steam locomotives, to preserve history for future generations to come!
